LLLS #32: Cybersecurity in the Smart Home

5.06.

In this lecture, we explore why a usable interface to the home network is essential in smart homes, especially as smart devices become more widespread. To help users stay informed about ongoing threats, we propose using LLMs to generate actionable security notifications that empower users to take cybersecurity into their own hands. These notifications are based on expert systems like intrusion detection systems and are tailored to users with varying levels of technical knowledge. Victor Jüttner will demonstrate how we generate these messages, motivate the need for such a system in the smart home context, and present:

  • our ongoing research on ethical considerations,
  • findings from a user study on message length and complexity, and
  • an evaluation framework to assess notification quality.
