From June 25 to 28, 2024, Leipzig was the vibrant host city for the 10th International Summer School on AI and Big Data, organized by ScaDS.AI Desden/Leipzig. This esteemed event gathered students, PhD candidates, researchers, and practitioners from around the globe to engage with the latest advancements in AI and Big Data. The unique venue at Leipzig Zoo provided an excellent service for the week’s events. This year’s Summer School saw a significant turnout, with over 130 of participants eager to delve into the world of AI and big data.

Program

The program for this year’s Summer School was meticulously crafted around six key areas of AI and Big Data, reflecting the current research focus of ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig. Each day was dedicated to specific themes, allowing participants to engage deeply with topics of their interest. For in depth information about speakers and topics, click here.

Tuesday, June 25th:

  • Generative AI and ML: Presentations included evaluations of generative retrieval systems and the use of large language models for bio-image analysis.
  • Human-Computer Interaction and AI: Topics covered AI-assisted UI design and AI-based traffic safety research.

Wednesday, June 26th:

  • Protein Design / Drug Design and AI: Discussions centered on AI’s role in drug discovery, molecule generation, and protein design.
  • Earth and Environmental Sciences and AI: Insights were provided on agricultural modeling, liquid droplet detection, and machine learning applications in earthquake physics.

Thursday, June 27th:

  • Mathematical Foundations of AI: Focus was placed on biases in neural networks, topological data analysis, and reparameterization in representation learning.

Friday, June 28th:

  • Human-AI Interaction in Writing Tools: Exploration of decision making, reliance, and trust in human-AI collaboration.
  • Each day also included sessions on Responsible AI, addressing the ethical implications and governance of AI technologies.

Networking and Social Activities

The Summer School wasn’t just about learning; it was also about building connections. Participants had ample opportunities to network, engage in discussions, and ask questions of the speakers. The social program included a city tour on the first evening and a dragon boat trip on the third day, providing a fun and relaxed environment to connect with peers and experts.
