14. February 2025
Educating the next generation is an important concern to ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig. We regularly work with schools and pupils and teach them about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and related fields. With those activities, we aim to inspire enthusiasm for science and future-oriented technologies to build a strong foundation for the next generation of researchers. At the beginning of February 2025, we participated in numerous events of that sort as part of our third mission. With this blog post, we give you an insight into the variety of our activities around schools and pupils.
On 05.02.2025, Prof. Ostap Okhrin and Dr. Iryna Okhrin joined the Career Fair at the Marie-Curie Gymnasium in Dresden. Together, they showcased the benefits of working in Science, while giving an inspiring insight into AI research at ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig and TU Dresden. The audience consisted of pupils from grades 9-11 with a great curiosity and enthusiasm for research and technology.
Once again, we participated in the Safer Internet Day, which took place on 11.02.2025 and was organized by the police in Dresden. Our team was present with an exhibition stand at Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium in Großenhain. At the exhibition, our live demos showcased how a trained machine learning model can identify body gestures and faces in real-time, or how computers can identify an object only by drawing a few basic lines. Two workshops were also part of the program:
We were excited to share our knowledge with the students and help them navigate the internet safely. Those skills are incredibly important for children and adults alike and we are proud to support in building and strengthening them.
ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig participated in the Girls for Robots program by the Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI). Following up on a 90-minute workshop by Erik Marx on 04.02.2025, where he teached the girls basic knowledge on AI and Machine Learning, we welcomed around 10 girls from grades 7 to 10 at the Living Lab in Dresden on 11.02.2025.
Norman Koch held an informative lecture on the application of AI in robotics, showcasing a real-world example of a robot designed for automation tasks. The participants had the chance to explore asanAI and learn the fundamentals of neural network training, complete with hands-on examples that they could replicate on their own. This session was followed by an engaging live demonstration by Andrei Politov on emotion recognition using AI. Here, the girls were able to interact with the technology firsthand. Furthermore, Prof. Sahar Vahdati and Prof. Jens Lehmann introduced the basics of Large Language Models (LLMs) and provided a practical game-task to help the pupils identify scenarios where LLMs could be advantageous. This interactive session empowered the girls to better understand the potential of AI and its diverse applications in both robotics and natural language processing.
At the Romain-Rolland-Gymnasium in Dresden, a school project on the topic of AI was initiated between 11.-13.02.2025. Aim of the project was for eleventh graders to impart knowledge in the field of AI to fifth grade students. We supported this initiative by inviting the group, consisting of 3 eleventh graders and 8 fifth graders, on 12.02.2025. Following a short introduction to ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig and our research activities, Erik Marx gave an AI workshop at EduInf. Afterwards, Monika Reich from the Interactive Science Lab (ISL) of the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Sciences (CIDS) guided the pupils through the //DataSpaces exhibition and gave valueable impulses for the subsequent group work.
We are deeply impressed by this project and the engagement of the pupils. We were excited about their huge interest in the topic and to support their learning process. By combining our expertise, we created a great program that is highly suitable to a younger audience. Together, we are looking forward to support similar initiatives in the future!
We highly encourage schools, parents and pupils to get in contact with us. Our Living Lab offers many activities for children, adolescents and adults to learn more about AI. We are happy to share our knowledge to demystify digitalization and promote a savvy approach to modern technologies. If you are interested, please get in contact with our Living Lab.
