Data Week 2024

16.04.2024 // SCADS

From April 15 to 19 2024, ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, the Institute for Applied Computer Science (InfAI), eccenca GmbH and the Data Competence Center for Cities and Regions (DKSR), hosted the third Data Week, a data festival for IT enthusiasts in the New City Hall of Leipzig. Data, Artificial Intelligence and everything related to digitalization: the diverse program of trainings, workshops, and lectures invited numerous interested parties to learn, discuss and generate innovative ideas together.

At the ScaDS.AI booth, visitors could get an insight into our center. In addition to photo galleries of our projects and a comfortable bean bag for pleasant conversations, our digital mirror was available for experiments. With the help of our staff, the AI mirror and its functions were explored, and fashion suggestions based on clothing were projected onto people in photos.

The Program

On Monday, the ScaDS.AI training “Collaborative work and version control with Git” took place in the Tower Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Haase from our center in Leipzig led the participants through a hands-on tutorial on data visualization: “In this hands-on session, we will work together online on a project on github.com. We will show how to share and collaborate on data, especially source code. The goal of the exercise is to give participants a feel for how to use tools like git, git pull requests, and git issues to manage small and large software projects online.”

On Thursday, Dr. Robert Haase presented another ScaDS.AI training on “Open Science, Licensing, and Copyright” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Haase explored open science and its components with the audience: “We will dive into the world of open science and define terms such as open source, open access, and the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). We will discuss how these methods of [scientific] communication and data management are changing the world and how we can practically integrate them into our work. Aspects such as copyright and licensing will play an important role.”

On the last day of Data Week, ScaDS.AI invited participants to a final training session from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In cooperation with the city of Leipzig, Dr. Robert Haase introduced city employees to the wide world of data management: “The data management session will take a closer look at the life cycle of data. How is data created, and what happens to it during processing? Who owns the data, and who is responsible for publishing, archiving, and repurposing it? We will use ChatGPT to create a data management plan. After an introduction to the topic, we will work in groups.”

Conclusion

In the end, ScaDS.AI, together with the other organizers, was able to meet many new people and inspire them with topics related to AI, digitization, and data. We are excited about the next Data Week!
