From November 25–27, 2025, Anne Schmieder participated in the expert conference “Generative AI for Biological Sequence Design” at the Wasem Kloster Engelthal in Ingelheim, Germany. It was organized by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and funded by the Wübben Stiftung.
The conference followed an open-discussion format, bringing together researchers to address the dual-use nature of generative AI in biology. The primary objective was to evaluate the risks and opportunities associated with AI-driven sequence design. These discussions culminated in the drafting of a white paper, which provides concrete recommendations for future policies and international regulations to ensure the responsible use of these technologies.
Beyond the formal output, the workshop offered a unique platform for interdisciplinary exchange. For Anne Schmieder and ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, the event resulted in valuable new connections and opened doors for future collaborations at the intersection of AI safety and biotechnology.
