On 11.-12.02.2025, the symposium Life@Lab 2 – Horizons of AI Research in Higher Education took place at the SLUB Open Science Lab. The second edition of the successful symposium welcomed educators, AI researchers, other interested professionals and students alike. It covered three key topics:

  • Education and AI
  • Ethical AI
  • Sustainable AI

Contributions by ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig

The team members of ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig were excited to contribute their expertise to the program of the symposium. Our numerous program items covered a wide range of topics related to our research area Responsible AI:

  • Dr. Betty Mayeku presented a perspective from a Kenyan university on AI and Inclusive Research Culture. You can learn more about her work as our current Ada Lovelace Guest Professor in Leipzig here.
  • Chrakhan Barzanji and Niclas Rosteck hosted the workshop KI_FEM: AI-based Coaching for support in every field of studies.
  • Dr. Sandra Hummel, Dr. Betty Mayeku, Mana-Teresa Donner, Gitanjali Wadhwa and Syed Hur Abbas presented One Size Doesn’t Fit All: Empowering Responsible Education with SAM, a Personalized, Target-Oriented AI Learning Assistant.
  • Anika Hannemann hosted a workshop on Maintaining Privacy in AI-Powered Education. 
  • Julia Möller-Klapperich, Berhan Sarilar and İrem Aydın spoke about the teaching of how to use AI tools responsibly from a legal studies perspective.
  • Dr. Hermann Diebel-Fischer was talking about the problem of operationalizing ethics for AI-assisted systems. Furthermore, he took part in the panel discussion Responsible AI in the context of Higher Education with Prof. Thomas Köhler, Prof. Sonja Schmer-Galunda (University of Florida) and Marilisa Herchet.

Life@Lab 2 – Horizons of AI Research in Higher Education

The symposium is part of the nationwide project Konzertierte Weiterbildungen zu künstlicher Intelligenz in der Hochschullehre of the Netzwerk Landeseinrichtungen für die digitale Hochschullehre (NeL) and funded by Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre (STIL).
