Math for AI and AI for Math: A new journal will provide an international forum for research at the intersection of mathematics and Artificial Intelligence. By exploring how these two fields can challenge and enrich each other, “Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence” aims to advance the mathematical foundations of AI and generate new mathematical ideas inspired by AI.
Artificial intelligence depends strongly on mathematical ideas and methods, but it is also increasingly changing how mathematical research is conducted. This raises questions about its potential to support mathematical discovery and whether it might replace human mathematical work. A new journal aims to explore the relationship between these fields as well as the opportunities this relationship offers for future research.
The journal welcomes rigorous theoretical, computational, and interdisciplinary research that advances both fields. Its scope ranges from developing new mathematical foundations for learning and intelligent systems, to using AI as a catalyst for mathematical discovery. Topics include geometric and topological learning, algebraic and statistical methods, scientific machine learning, optimization, automated theorem proving, and AI-enabled mathematical research.
By emphasizing original work with lasting theoretical significance, “Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence” seeks to go beyond short-lived empirical advances and foster new approaches at the intersection of mathematical theory and intelligent computation.
Jürgen Jost, Founder of the journal and ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig PI summarizes: “As AI systems become increasingly capable of solving complex mathematical problems, the relationship between human mathematical reasoning and AI is attracting growing attention. The key question is not simply whether AI can solve mathematical problems, but how it can contribute to new insights, methods, and directions for discovery. “
“Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence” aims to provide a forum for investigating these questions and exploring how the interaction between mathematics and AI may shape the future of mathematical research.
Jürgen Jost, together with Gunnar Carlsson of Stanford University and Guowei Wei of the University of Georgia founded the journal. Jost and Carlsson will serve as Editors-in-Chief. The journal’s editorial board includes, besides for instance the recent Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman, several current members of Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) and ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig: Marzieh Eidi, Parvaneh Joharinad and MPI Mis Director and ScaDS.AI PI Anna Wienhard.
