AI, 3D printers and VR glasses have a major impact on our everyday lives, yet they seem like dreams of the future for many. Therefore, it is worth taking a look behind concepts such as algorithms, programming and machine learning: both from a personal and professional perspective. That is why the Chair of Didactics of Computer Science and ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig have invited four high school graduates to find out more about pursuing an engineering degree at TU Dresden from 18-19.08.2022. At tryIng 2022, our researchers made sure to answer as many questions as possible to give an insight into the broad field of engineering.
On the first day of TryING 2022, the participants dealt with the topic of 3D modeling and 3D printing. They first programmed 3D models and planned their own projects. In addition, they learned how computer-aided manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting work in order to put their own project ideas into practice. The participants showed outstanding creativity and initiative while learning more about this interesting application field of computer science.
On the second day of the workshop, the participants learned what AI means and what can be understood by AI. Then we looked at the three types of machine learning: supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Last, we discussed the basis of neural networks, which are increasingly used in machine learning. At the end, we invited the participants to our Living Lab. Here, we talked to them about the application areas of machine learning in everyday life. Furthermore, we showed them in an exclusive hands-on session how to train an AI with the help of asanAI.
What is it really like to pursue an engineering degree at TU Dresden? At tryING 2022, high school graduates were able to gain insights into various fields of engineering before starting their course of study. With this offering, we hope to inspire young women to work in this highly interesting scientific area. The trial study is structured in a way, that allows participants to sign-up for their prefered course of study afterwards.
