Presentation:
SAP Hana & Vora

Technology can shape our world. Key trends are around digital business, Internet of things, big data and machine learning. These trends impose a transformation for businesses on the technology and the application side. Bi-modal IT – introduced by Gartner describing the practice of managing two coherent styles for work (one focus on predictability, the other on exploration) – explains how businesses approach these trends.

This session will focus on SAP HANA, SAP Vora and SAP Data Hub to provide technology innovations for data management to serve the needs of digital businesses and provide solutions to challenges faced by enterprises around the world. SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform deployable on-premise or in the cloud.

At the core of this real-time data platform is the SAP HANA database that is surrounded by various advanced data processing functionalities and NoSQL abilities. We also introduce SAP Vora extending SAP HANA to handle massive-scale out scenarios with hundreds of nodes and discuss its architecture and challenges. Additionally, we show SAPs newly created pipeline engine, supporting scalable, complex and custom data transformations in an easy and interactive way giving users full control of their data processing. Finally, we demonstrate how SAP Data Hub as an umbrella can bring all these technologies together and provides user easy ways of dealing with their data and integrate various SAP and non-SAP technologies. We close the talk by highlighting challenges and open problems where we see the need of a close cooperation with state of the art research.

Bio

Stefan Bäuerle is a Chief Development Architect for SAP HANA Platform & Database and member of the SAP CTO circle at SAP. His focus of work is around various aspects of the SAP HANA Platform, e.g. utilizing the SAP HANA Platform in different scenarios, related programming models and infrastructures, development and domain specific languages, tools and application containers, Platform scenarios like Big Data and Internet-of-Things, cloud deployments and advanced data processing enhancements (e.g. machine learning). Stefan Bäuerle has a history of 20 years at SAP with different roles in software development, architecture and management in topic areas like SAP Basis infrastructure, Business Process Management technologies, Data and Process Integration, Application Platform , Cloud (PaaS / SaaS) and the SAP HANA Platform & Database. Prior to SAP, he received a master degree on business informatics at the university of applied sciences in Karlsruhe.

Jonathan Dees is a software engineer at SAP and develops databases systems SAP Vora and SAP HANA. During his PhD thesis at SAP and KIT he built a novel database engine tuned for fast query execution leveraging code compilation and efficient data structures. The database engine turned into productive use at SAP and evolved into the massively distributed database system SAP Vora. Besides databases his general interests are algorithms, data structures and programming. Jonathan Dees received a master degree in computer science with distinction from KIT in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2010.
