Presentation: Data science for understanding extreme events in the Earth system

Extreme events often lead to substantial disruptions in ecosystems and human societies. With climate change, many extreme events are shifting and a good understanding of the drivers of large impacts is paramount for climate risk assessment. Novel statistical and data analytical approaches offer excellent opportunities to efficiently explore large amounts of available observations and model simulations to better understand extremes. I will present an overview of current challenges and opportunities in this area of research.

Bio

Jakob Zscheischler holds a degree in mathematics and completed his PhD on extreme events in climate and their consequences on the terrestrial carbon cycle in 2014. He then conducted research at ETH Zürich and the University of Bern in Switzerland where he pioneered the emerging research field of compound weather and climate events. Since 2020 he is a group leader at UFZ. His research focuses on the development of new statistical and data science approaches to study high-impact weather and climate events.
