ScaDS Big Data Industry Forum at BIS-Conference in Leipzig

On 8 July 2016, the Scads Big Data Industry Forum was held in Leipzig. In conjunction with the 19th International Conference on Business Information Systems various projects related to Big Data were presented. The presenters included young as well as renowned software companies.

Frederick Ho from IBM Watson Research Center gave insight into IBM’s System G, a graph computing platform. In addition to the discussion of the platform architecture, he also demonstrated how to analyze live social media data through visualization and graph analysis methods. The simplification data analysis tasks still represents a challenge for many companies. Dr. Björn Lohrmann of KNIME presented their innovative tool that uses visual workflows with predefined operators to assemble analysis workflows. The emphasis in his speech was in the scalable components and operators and discussed their implementation.

Markus Zappolino EMC impressively showed how future developments and advances are feasible through data analysis. Furthermore, he explained how universities can be offset by IT solutions from EMC in the position to participate in this.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Wojtek Kozaczynski of Microsoft Research talked about the challenges posed by large amounts of data in monitoring and fault diagnosis in the cloud platform Microsoft Azure and discussed the necessary solutions.
