Living Lab Tour at TUD Freshers’ Week 2025

Living Lab Tour at TUD Freshers’ Week 2025
Events

As part of our ongoing collaboration with iFSR (TUD Dresden University of Technology), we welcomed two groups of enthusiastic freshers to the Living Lab during this year’s Fresher’s Week. The sessions gave students a chance to explore ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig Demonstrators and see how artificial intelligence (AI) works in practice. The sessions were organized by Neringa Jurenaite and facilitated by Moritz Müller and Norman Koch

Getting Hands-On with the Demonstrators

The sessions featured four interactive demos that introduced students to different aspects of AI research and its real-world applications:

  • Multicut: How complicated algorithms can get
Students explored how complex algorithms work and saw how they can solve real-world data problems. The Multicut project focuses on image segmentation, teaching our visitors how computers separate objects within an image accurately. Find out more about Multicut.
  • asanAI: How one can start building their own machine learning models
Next, the students tried out working with simple machine learning models and discovered how easy it can be to get started with model development. Learn more about asanAI.
  • FloodVis: How one can walk in the data
Using immersive visualization, students “walked in the data,” exploring flood scenarios in virtual reality (VR) and experiencing the data in a spatial way. Read more about FloodVis.
  • MagicMirror: How models can be used in practice
Finally, the session ended with the MagicMirror demo. This interactive system lets users virtually try on clothes and change backgrounds using generative AI. Students enjoyed seeing it in action and how fun AI can be. See more information on the magic mirror.

Students’ Impressions

The atmosphere during the sessions was lively and full of curiosity. Students enjoyed experimenting with the models and quickly created meaningful results. In particular, the MagicMirror sparked excitement and laughter, showing how AI can be both fun and educational. In addition, many students shared that seeing AI in action made abstract concepts much easier to understand.

Looking Ahead

After the demonstrations, students learned about opportunities to get involved with ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, including research collaborations, workshops, and Living Lab activities. These sessions help students connect classroom theory with hands-on experience. They also give newcomers a clear view of how AI can be part of their studies and future projects. Moving forward, we hope these experiences inspire students to explore AI further and continue learning through practical applications.
