From August 21-25 2017, the two Big Data Competence Centers in Germany, ScaDS Dresden/Leipzig and BBDC, hosted the 3rd International Summer School on Big Data in their summer school series. The summer school took place at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
Program & Highlights
Preceding the 3rd Joint International ScaDS and BBDC Summer School for Big Data, a Big Data hackathon was held in Munich from August 19th-20th. The hackathon aimed to attract a diverse and international audience from academia and business and in particular computer science master students. During the two-day hackathon, participants learned how to build complex real-time data analytics pipelines based on open-source cluster-computing frameworks (i.e., Apache Flink and Apache Spark).
In the open coding session, participants implemented their ideas using this framework. The task to be solved was to select one or more real-time data sources, provided either by self-selected samples or by historical data sources, and create real-time analytics that improve strategic planning or decision making. Prizes (up to €1,500) were awarded to the groups with the best ideas, implementations and demonstrations.
The summer school provided overviews as well as deep dive sessions about the following topic highlights:
- Overview about Big Data concepts and architectures
- Data integration for Big Data
- Scalable graph analytics
- Data processing and streaming
- Data analytics methods
- Concepts of data and meta data management
