Better Internet for Kids: Safer Internet Day 2026

Better Internet for Kids: Safer Internet Day 2026
Events

On February 3, 2026, the Living Lab of ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig took part in the Safer Internet Day 2026. Following an invitation by the prevention department of the Polizeidirektion Dresden, we joined this year’s event under the theme “Better Internet for Kids” at a school in Weinböhla.

Our contribution

The Living Lab team showcased three main demonstrators to the pupils:

Object identification at scale

This demo showed how a simple camera setup combined with standard computing hardware can quickly and accurately identify people and moving objects. This can support applications such as crowd assistance and traffic monitoring.

Emotion detection on edge devices

With this demo, the pupils explored how devices like smartphones or tablets can analyse facial expressions locally. This opens up possibilities for wellbeing and self-support applications while also prompting discussions about privacy and responsible use.

Interactive Robo Dog

The highlight of the day for many pupils was our Robo Dog prototype, which can interact with people and its surroundings in real time. Although still in the development phase, the robot offered an engaging and playful way to experience how intelligent systems work in practice and to better understand AI technologies.

Safer Internet Day 2026

Safer Internet Day is a global initiative that promotes a safer and more positive digital environment, especially for children and young people. Each year, organisations, educators, policymakers and communities come together to raise awareness and share practical knowledge about responsible online behaviour. In 2026, the initiative continues its mission to empower young users, support parents and educators, and encourage cooperation across sectors to build a better internet for everyone.

Across Europe and beyond, events and activities focus on digital literacy, online safety, respectful communication, and understanding both the opportunities and risks of digital technologies. Through our participation, we supported this shared goal by making AI technologies understandable and tangible while opening space for discussion. This helped young visitors and families better understand how digital tools shape their online experiences.

We previously joined programs in Saxony for the Safer Internet Day in 2025, 2024, 2023.
