A Legal Framework for AI
In April 2021, the European Commission has published a proposal to regulate artificial intelligence in the European Union. The proposal for the so-called AI-Act is the first comprehensive piece of legislation seeking to establish a system of controls and safeguards tailored to the risks associated with certain AI systems. With this risk-based approach, the proposal seeks to strike a balance between addressing perceived risks linked to AI, on the one hand, and not unduly constraining or hindering technological development. There is still a long way to go before the legislative project is adopted by the European Parliament and the Member States in the European Council. The talk summarizes current developments and will discuss the approach chosen by the European legislature with the participants.
Bio
Prof. Dr. Anne Lauber-Rönsberg holds the chair of Civil Law, Intellectual Property, Media and Data Protection Law at Technische Universität Dresden. She is vice-dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science and director of the LL.M. program “International Studies in Intellectual Property Law”. Her research focuses on intellectual property law, data protection law and personality rights, in particular on the impact of digitisation on the legal framework.
